Biographies to key members of our professional real estate group can be found below.

 

Samuel K. Freshman, President and Chairman

Mr. Freshman founded Standard in 1961 and has been responsible for the acquisition, development and management of approximately $500 million of real property in 11 states and more than 25 cities. Earlier in his career, Mr. Freshman founded and was the managing partner of the law firm of Freshman, Marantz, Orlanski, Cooper & Klein, which merged with K&L Gates.

Mr. Freshman is an expert on real estate investment and syndication and has served as Adjunct Professor of Real Estate at the USC Marshall School of Business, as well as an expert witness in over fifty cases. He has also been the author of numerous articles on real estate matters. Mr. Freshman received a Bachelor of Arts in pre-legal curriculum and his law degree from Stanford

Craig Walsh, Senior Vice President

Mr. Walsh is responsible for property operations and asset management, including renovation, repositioning, upgrading, and leasing of projects after their acquisition. He has over 35 years of experience in a broad range of real estate activities including property management, rehabilitation, marketing and leasing of apartments, manufactured housing communities, motels, shopping
centers/malls, office buildings, industrial facilities and mini-warehouse developments.

Prior to joining Standard, Mr. Walsh was President of Southwest Property Management Company, a large Oklahoma-based real estate development company, from 1980 to 1985. Prior to that, from 1972 to 1980, Mr. Walsh was President of Guardian Management, where he was responsible for the property and asset management of approximately 3,500 apartment units. Mr. Walsh is a
Certified Property Manager and served on numerous boards of apartment-related associations. He graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration from the University of Miami.

 

     
 

Jason K. Wallace, General Counsel

Mr. Wallace brings over 25 years experience in representing developers and “big box” tenants in a wide range of commercial and retail properties. After practicing law with Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher in Los Angeles, Mr. Wallace left to develop multi-family projects for his own account. Subsequently, he served as Vice President of Real Estate in the turnaround firm of Sigoloff & Associates. As part of his restructuring work, he acted as the President of L J Hooker ompanies, an Atlanta-based developer of enclosed regional malls, community shopping centers, industrial parks and single family subdivisions. During this time, he guided the re-capitalization, repositioning, and ultimate disposition of more than $2 billion in commercial and residential real estate.

Following Sigoloff, Mr. Wallace returned to law, founding a firm that specialized in representation of major retail tenants in Southern California development, including Safeway, Vons Companies, Ralphs Groceries, Food 4 Less, and Orchard Supply Hardware.

Mr. Wallace received his B.S. in Chemistry from Reed College and earned his law degree with honors from University of Utah College of Law in 1981.

 

     
 

Majella Weeraratne, Vice President and Controller

Ms. Weeraratne is responsible for all financial reporting and accounting systems administration and is also a member of Standard’s Operations Committee.. Ms. Weeraratne has over 23 years experience in residential, office and commercial property management accounting, and has participated in the management of over $2 billion in real estate assets. She is an expert in the use and administration of Asset and Property Management software by Yardi Systems. Prior to joining Standard, Ms. Weeraratne was employed with Koll Investment Management, Arden Realty, Cushman and Wakefield, Westfield Corporation and Summit Commercial Properties.

Ms. Weeraratne is a licensed real estate salesperson with the State of California. She holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Sri Lanka.

 

     
 

Robert E. Fleischer, Construction Manager

Mr. Fleischer is responsible for major development and construction activities for the company's multi-family and commercial properties. He also coordinates acquisition due diligence and environmental compliance operations.

He is an experienced real estate development professional with over thirty years of experience in development, acquisition, construction and property management of apartment and condominium projects as well as commercial and single family residential properties nationwide. Mr. Fleischer has been with Standard for over 18 years.

Mr. Fleischer attended Farleigh Dickinson and Rutgers Universities and is licensed by the State of California as a General "B" Contractor and as a Real Estate Salesperson. He is also an accredited AHERA Asbestos Abatement Contractor/Supervisor.

 

     
 

Jan B. Brzeski, Senior Consultant

Mr. Brzeski founded real estate investment advisor Standard Capital in April 2006. From 2002 through 2006, Mr. Brzeski held the positions of Director of Research, Director of Acquisitions, and Vice President of Acquisitions at Standard Management Company. During this period, he learned and practiced that company’s value-oriented approach to real estate investment, acquiring more than a dozen properties including shopping centers, industrial property and land.

Prior to joining Standard Management Company, Mr. Brzeski worked as an investment banking analyst at Goldman, Sachs & Co. He also co-founded, operated and sold a media services company called STV Communications, Inc.
